About Us

Have you ever walked into somebody’s home and said to yourself

“I love everything in here…I could live here!”

Well, that’s what happens again and again when people walk into Hammertown.  It feels like you’re coming home to a comfortable, beautiful environment where you can shop and explore every nook and cranny or sit quietly and relax on one of our comfortable sofas or chairs while you leaf through the latest home design or cook book.

It all started 35 years ago as a little shop, in an old horse barn, in a little town called Pine Plains.  Owner, Joan Osofsky, called it Hammertown Barn.  It was her vision to bring a “modern country” sensibility to this corner of the Hudson Valley.  And, she succeeded. Now, with the addition of two more Hammertown stores (in Rhinebeck, NY and Great Barrington, MA), she continues to inspire her customers to love where they live by carefully selecting and curating every item in our stores. Whether it’s a pair of earrings, a lamp, a piece of furniture, a book or a child’s toy, it is selected with standards of design, purpose, style and most importantly – comfort.  This is what has made Hammertown an award-winning “lifestyle store”- selected as one of the Top 100 Stores in the country by Cottage Living Magazine and named one of House Beautiful’s favorite shops in America. We were also recently voted Best Home Store in the Hudson Valley by Hudson Valley Magazine.  And, online praise from Vogue Living.com and Departures.com, who also call Hammertown their favorite Hudson Valley home store.  We couldn’t be prouder.

Joan (with writer Abby Adams) broadened Hammertown’s fan base with the publication of two books (published by Rizzoli): “Love Where You Live: At Home in the Country” in which she shares her in-depth knowledge on stylish modern country living with a collection of creative ideas and real-life tips for making one’s home warm and welcoming.  Their second book “Entertaining in the Country: Love Where You Eat |Festive Table Settings, Favorite Recipes, and Design Inspiration” features an array of inspiring seasonal parties hosted by home cooks and food professionals, like food star Julia Turshen and Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge; Dana Cowin of Food & Wine fame; and Erin French, the James Beard–nominated chef/owner of The Lost Kitchen in Freedom, Maine.  It’s an indispensable guide to casual home entertaining filled with imaginative ideas, practical tips, and delicious recipes from well-known chefs, and restaurateurs

We’ve come a long way for a local family-owned and operated business and we continue to grow.  Our website, Hammertown.com has become a source not only for online shopping but for our local community as well.  We feature restaurant reviews, other local businesses, local events, recipes and book reviews…we even encourage local philanthropy.

Like our stores, we want our website to feel like you’re coming home, too.  So, have a look around.  Check out some recipes, design stories, ongoing sales or just do some online window shopping.
